Larry won the Tattersall Trophy July Championship for the 100 lap main event at Middletown,NY
*He has another trophy that’s inscribed: “Tattersall Trophy Arlington International Championship Winner --- Larry Shurter”. September 13th, 1953 Mavis records Larry qualifying forth in the time trials for Arlington’s 200 lap race. He was eleven hundredths of a second off the fastest time. She writes that the race lasted 1 hour 18 minutes but shows no finishes. I’d like to imagine her focused, quiet reserve dissolving and her running for the pits without writing the finishes. Maybe she was headed for the scoring booth, papers clutched firmly against the swirling clay particulated wind of the last lapped racing cars crossing the finishing line. Anyway, with no date or lap information on the trophy, for now I’m assuming it was the Arlington 200 in 1953 that Larry won.
*In (approximately) 23 race meets Larry won 12 times.
While I have confirmed 12 wins, some records have been lost so I cannot confirm a final total.
1954 – 1959 Records were lost and/or incomplete

Larry introduced me to Bob at one of the Living Legends Reunions. With warm open smiles, they shook hands, and Larry laid his other hand on Bob’s shoulder. He said, (as much to Bob as to me), “Bob was one of the best at finding a hole. If I was behind him, I’d get on his bumper and follow him through. If he was behind me, it was a hell of a job to keep him there.” They both had the large fingers of men who were their own mechanics’.
50 lap Feature: starting last, Winner Bobby Devine sets new track record at 1:51:86, 2nd Jokko, 3rd Brown, 4th McCarty, Cody Disbrow, Shurter

Rhinebeck Speedway, N.Y. Stan Disbrow wins 3rd feature followed by Dee Carlson and Larry Shurter.
Byron Fisher, Larry Shurter, Doug Garrison, Hoppy Jensen and George Welch saw the checkered for their races.

Doug Garrison and Goodermote win twin 25 lappers.
Except from newspaper:
…but it was Larry Shurter of West Shokan who kept the fans on edge through the scramble.
(Shurter, starting in 17th position) engaged Bob Disbrow in one of the tightest finishes ever seen at the track, missing the checkered flag by inches.

Top: Mavis Shurter racing record for Rhinebeck Speedway. Larry Shurter in the #95 wins heat and 1st semi-final. He qualifies the #75 in the 3rd heat.

Close friend George Gallup wins !st Heat Race in his #103 V8 with overhead valves.
Avery Brothers, Arlos “Bucky” and Don compete against each other in the 2nd Heat.
Bucky drops out. Don wins in his 1950 Oldsmobile #42.
J. Romer wins 3rd Heat in the #5

But it’s his brother Don Avery who wins the 100 lap Main Event followed by George Gallup. It was an all-in-the-family racing night with Mavis recording the lineups, make of car, results and running time of race. Why Larry was a no-show is a mystery.
